日英交流400年日本に望遠鏡

9月10日 10時2分 日本とイギリスの交流が始まってことしで400年になるのを記念して、当時、イギリス側から江戸幕府に望遠鏡が贈られたことにちなんでイギリス製の手作りの望遠鏡が日本に寄贈されることになり、ロンドンで披露されました。 ことしは、江戸幕府を開いた徳川家康と2代将軍秀忠が1613年に、当時のイングランド国王ジェームズ1世の使者と謁見してちょうど400年で、これを記念して日本とイギリスではさまざまなイベントが行われています。 当時、イギリス側からは発明されて間もない望遠鏡が江戸幕府に贈られたという記録があることから、これにちなんでイギリス製の手作りの望遠鏡が日本に寄贈されることになり、9日、ロンドン塔の中の博物館で披露されました。 この博物館には、江戸幕府が返礼としてイギリス側に贈った戦国時代のよろいが展示されており、望遠鏡のお披露目はその前で行われました。 望遠鏡の製作費を寄付した日本で貿易会社の相談役を務めるロビン・メイナードさんは19世紀の終わりから日英間の貿易に携わってきた家系で、「私自身も35年間日本で暮らして働き、日本は私にとても親切にしてくれました。この望遠鏡は両国の交流の証しになると思い、寄付を決めたのです」と話していました。 Original news item here (for a limited period) http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20130910/k10014418261000.html
